The Estimator will be responsible for analyzing costs and preparing estimates on construction projects for civil engineering, architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical projects. This role will collaborate with and support the Senior Estimator on bid preparation on large projects and take lead on smaller estimates.
This position is based out of our Northern Ontario office in Sudbury, Ontario.
Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Collaboratively complete the full-cycle bid process; either as the lead on smaller projects or as a partner working on a portion of a complex project.
- Utilize and apply research skills at every stage of the process to identify project-specific prices related to key items including labour, equipment, and materials.
- Actively complete full quantity take-offs to ensure accuracy of contract specifications and pricing; coordinate like items with other estimators in consideration of bulk pricing opportunities.
- Performing bid day assignments; take bids and analyze bid recaps and distribute bid documents to subs and suppliers
- Grow and maintain strong relationships with trade partners, consultants and clients to achieve the project goals and vision;
- Communicate and monitor resolution of any problems or questions encountered during the bid process; RFIs and with trade partners, such as subcontractors and suppliers.
- Checking all addenda; checking, reading, incorporating, pricing and distributing
- Placing sub bid request ads and minority bid ads; Updating subcontractor solicitation list
- Maintain unit rate database and set up alternates and unit prices
- Attending pre-bid, site visit and start up meetings as required
- Assist with AFP projects as directed by Chief Estimator
- Calling and coordinating Scopes of Work with all subcontractors; ensuring subcontractor bid coverage on all Scopes of Work
- Assisting in pricing COs as and when required
- Preliminary construction schedules in MS Project or equal
- Prepare conceptual budgets
- Assist Operations in subcontract buyouts
- Create and maintain Tender Package front-end documents and Scopes of Work, as well as procurement log with bidders
- Manage and administer individual Tender Packages; preparing recommendations for all Tender Packages and performing analysis upon closing
Educational & Professional Requirements:
- 2-year college diploma in a construction-related discipline
- Minimum 2 years of progressive experience in construction cost estimating
- Proven ability to take a lead role on estimates $50 million and under; experience on estimates over $100 million
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word software; advanced skills using Microsoft Excel and MS project software and P6
- Knowledge and proficiency with Trimble WinEst is an asset
- Ability to learn and maintain competency in all applicable software/programs
- General construction knowledge; understands specifications, methods, and procedures
- Intermediate knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take-off procedures, sub-trade procurement, pricing, and bid closing procedures
- Experience estimating a design-build project
- Experience putting together estimates for commercial & infrastructure projects
- Ability to identify risk associated with contract/project documents
