Project Manager, Northern Ontario

The Project Manager, Civil/Industrial reports to and communicates regularly with the Senior Project Manager and/or Construction Manager and oversees all project activities including decision making authority for all aspects of the project; managing project performance, including costs, schedule and quality; ensures project profitability, schedule adherence and owner satisfaction; understands Health and Safety Program; oversees Project Coordinators and collaborate with the Project Superintendents; maintains an excellent relationship with sub-trades and clients; provides leadership and direction to other members of the project team.

This position is based out of our Northern Ontario office located in Sudbury, Ontario.

Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Job Knowledge & Technical Skills: Assumes the lead role in planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing a project. Possesses the experience required to manage all aspects of the project and the site team, with a high-level understanding of typical construction methods, systems, materials, and practices.  Has a refined understanding of building concepts, principles, and construction methods.  Involved in Pre-Construction activities including site logistics, permit requirements, General Conditions, Insurance and Bonds and schedule.
  • Contract Management: Support and/or lead, if required, tendering process, including preparing subcontractors’ scopes of work. Attend subcontractor pre-award meetings, and project start up meetings.  Demonstrates a strong knowledge and understanding of both the prime contract and subcontracts.
  • Risk & Financial Management: Develop and maintain a Risk Register, including forecasted risks, potential risks, cost and/or schedule impacts, as well as solutions to mitigate the risks. Manage budgets and timely submission of billings. Hold Owner accountable to payment timelines as per contractual requirements.  Identify revenue opportunities independently and in collaboration with the Executive-in-Charge.
  • Planning and Scheduling: Develops, implements and maintains a comprehensive schedule ensuring accurate sequencing and resource allocation to meet contractual requirements with guidance from Executive-in-Charge. Proactively monitors, revises, and clearly communicates schedule revisions to all project stakeholders (Owner, Consultants Subcontractors, Site Team, etc.).
  • Health & Safety: Strong level of understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Barclay Constructors Safety Program. Maintains a standard of excellence with respect to workplace safety through the commitment and cooperation of Barclay Constructors and our employees.

Educational & Professional Requirements:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in a related engineering or construction management discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in project management from project pursuit to project close out, overseeing commercial construction projects (hard bid, AFP and/or negotiated)
  • Previous management experience within a mid – large general contractor; experience in a unionized environment an asset
  • Eng and/or LEED certifications an asset
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plans.
  • A solid understanding of all construction trades and construction techniques.
  • Strong and effective communication skills including verbal, written and technical/computer skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Positive relationship building abilities with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Driver’s license and access to a vehicle required
